It was a cold night and a winter storm was brewing outside in downtown Niagara Falls, NY but that didn’t stop fans from filling up The Rapids Theatre when The Last Hero Tour featuring Alter Bridge – with special guests Weapons of Anew and Nonpoint – made a stop on January 31, 2017.
The night got underway with New York City metal band Weapons of Anew. I had never heard of these guys but they got the crowd going with their short and energetic set. Singer Ray West, along with guitarist Freddy Ordine (formerly of Axiom and HavocHate), bassist Stefan Reno Cutrupi and drummer Chris Manfre kept the audience mesmerized and could have easily played a longer set. They are definitely a band to watch out for when they come back on their own.
Next up was Florida’s Nonpoint – a band I never heard till this night. They started their seven-song set with Miracle and went into What A Day, Breaking Skin and Divided….Conquer Them. One of my favorites of the night was Nonpoint‘s cover of In the Air Tonight by none other, Phil Collins! Singer Elias Soriano pulled it off amazingly giving the song new life. Drummer Robb Rivera was set up sideways for Nonpoint‘s entire set making it easier to see him when normally drummers are hidden in the back and are harder to see behind their kits. Nonpoint also includes guitarist Rasheed Thomas, bassist Adam Woloszyn and lead guitarist BC Kochmit.
Finally, it was time for headliners Alter Bridge featuring vocalist Myles Kennedy (Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators), guitarist Mark Tremonti (Tremonti, Creed), bassist Brian Marshall (Creed) and drummer Scott Phillips (Creed). Alter Bridge is currently on a North American tour in support of their fifth studio album, The Last Hero.
Alter Bridge began their set with The Writing on the Wall, Come to Life, Farther Than the Sun and Addicted to Pain. One of the hightlights was just past the halfway mark of the show when Kennedy performed the acoustic number Watch Over You before the band came back and continued with The Other Side, Isolation and more.
For the encore the band didn’t slow down when they played Show Me a Leader. Kennedy and Temonti then did dueling guitar solos before finishing the night off with Rise Today.
It was a great way to start 2017. But unfortunately the night had to come to an end. Thanks to The Rapids Theatre for hosting this show and a special thanks to Alter Bridge‘s management for the media pass.
