EFFIE ZILCH ANNOUNCES LP “HIGHER CALLING” OUT JULY 10 VIA REDTONE RECORDS

Press release –

Led by Grammy-winning producer and guitarist Steve Wyreman and vocalist-guitarist Evanne Barcenas, Effie Zilch continues to carve out a sound that privileges instinct over industry. Their fifth studio album in just three years, Higher Calling is a sonically expansive, riff-driven collection that draws from gospel, Motown, and deconstructed blues, transforming familiar forms into something deeply human, searching, and alive.
Opening the album, “Easy” sets the tone with quiet intensity. Built on gospel piano and a melodic bass line, the intimate and deeply felt track unfolds like a Sunday sermon before slipping into a subtle current of Bay Area funk reminiscent of Sly Stone. Written as a message to a daughter, the song carries both tenderness and urgency.
“You can’t rely on the powers that be, so listen carefully before you speak… you’ve got to take it easy on your mother.”
Sung as both a plea and a guiding hand, “Easy” introduces Higher Calling with intention, inviting listeners into a record shaped by reflection, connection, and craft.
Arriving just three months after their EP The Kitchen Sink, Higher Calling finds Effie Zilch expanding their sonic palette while deepening their artistic philosophy. Rather than chasing trends, the duo leans into a process guided by intuition and curiosity, resulting in a collection that feels cohesive not through genre, but through purpose.
The album moves fluidly through mood and form: from the tongue-in-cheek, soul-infused groove of “Lover Boy” to the mythic drift of “The Argo,” the desert mirage of “Salton Sea,” and the intimate ache of “Teardrops.” Tracks like “Underneath the Weather” turn outward with a communal call-to-action, while “On the Loose” pushes forward with restless energy. By the time the title track arrives, wrapped in tape echoes and wall-of-sound reverb, the message lands with quiet clarity: sometimes a higher calling isn’t found in grandeur, but in the simple act of loving someone in the present moment.
Effie Zilch itself is rooted in San Francisco mythology. The name comes from a fictional muse imagined by longtime San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen, a figure meant to represent quiet domestic life. But Wyreman and Barcenas reimagine that idea entirely, transforming introspection into something outward-facing and electric.
Their collaboration channels the spirit of the Bay Area’s countercultural lineage, drawing from a wide-ranging palette that includes Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Hendrix, and the Staple Singers, alongside influences from poetry, painting, and classical composition. The result is music that resists easy categorization, grounded instead in a shared belief that sound should reflect a broader creative life.
Wyreman’s production background spans work connected to artists like Jay-Z, Rihanna, John Legend, Logic, and Leon Bridges, along with touring alongside Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, The Who, and The Rolling Stones. It brings a fluency in bridging vintage textures with modern recording. Together with Barcenas, he shapes songs that feel both timeless and immediate.
Across Higher Calling, Effie Zilch isn’t chasing a moment, they’re building a body of work. It’s a practice rooted in curiosity, intention, and a refusal to separate music from the world that informs it, inviting listeners to step out of the noise and into something more lasting.
