Finnish melodic death metal titans WOLFHEART return with Draconian Darkness II, an ambitious EP that deepens their frostbitten legacy. Lead single “Carnivore” sets the tone for the EP with menacing riffs and vicious growls, growing in power and grandeur as the track creeps along.
This five-track release showcases every facet of WOLFHEART’s trademark sound: raw, poetic, and powerfully atmospheric. Featuring two new tracks (including orchestral and acoustic versions), plus a crushing live rendition from their latest album, Draconian Darkness II captures the band’s cold grandeur in both studio precision and on-stage intensity.
“Forefathers” charges triumphantly forward with turbulent orchestrations and dense vocal layers. Though the intensity of the band’s signature sound dominates, the track has space to breathe. Delicate piano notes sing between raging guitar riffs, and the orchestration carries the song to new heights in the chorus. As always, WOLFHEART is equally dynamic and fierce.
“Burning Sky (Live)” showcases the band’s prowess onstage. Ominous clean guitar notes ring in the approaching storm, and beauty is once again entwined with ferocity. The lyrics speak of eternal winter and everlasting darkness, and WOLFHEART conjures this vision with passion and unrelenting force. The audience remains rapt and spellbound until the storm fades.
Then, in stark contrast, “The Gale (Acoustic)” finds the band evoking the calm within the storm that rages in its predecessor from Draconian Darkness (2024). Shadows and ice linger in the soundscape even though the clean, stripped-down instrumentation adds warmth to the music.
Concluding the EP, “Grave (Orchestral)” calls forth the majesty that underpins WOLFHEART’s signature style. Intense orchestration nearly always prowls in the background of the band’s compositions, but WOLFHEART sends it forth on full display here. This orchestral rendition recontextualizes the melodic death metal masterpiece into an epic cinematic score.
