There’s heartbreak at the centre of “Back For Me,” the new single from Brandon Wolfe Scott (of Yukon Blonde), but not the kind that lingers in despair. Instead, the song captures the strange optimism of moving forward: carrying the memories of a relationship without being trapped inside them.

“At its core, it’s a breakup song, but not a sad one.” Brandon explains. “It’s about going through the motions of moving on while quietly choosing hope. I never wanted it to feel heavy. Even in the ache, there can be momentum and positivity.”

Originally written as a slower, finger-picked and reflective piece, “Back For Me,” out now on Victory Pool Records, transformed in the studio through collaboration and longtime friends and musical cohorts Gavin Gardiner and Champagne James Robertson of MOONRIIVR. Joined by drummer and percussionist Lyle Molzan, the song evolved into something brighter, playful, and rhythmically alive, inspired by the buoyant spirit of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Cecilia.”

“Stacked vocal harmonies, driving acoustics, layered percussion, and that feeling of forward motion you can’t help but move to,” says Brandon. “That shift changed everything.”

The track was recorded last summer at All Day Coconut during a sweltering Toronto heat wave, with the band cutting the foundational tracks live off the floor.

“We jammed the song in a bunch of different ways, trying tempos, grooves, textures until it finally clicked,” Brandon recalls. “And when it did, it felt effortless. Like the song had decided what it wanted to be.”

Adding another layer of emotional resonance, Brandon’s former bandmate Rebecca Gray contributed harmonies recorded remotely from his Vancouver apartment.

Her voice added this lift and warmth that really sealed the feeling, not nostalgia, but growth. She’s always been one of my favourite people to sing with.”

While the title may hint at reconciliation, “Back For Me” ultimately points inward.

“Back For Me” isn’t about getting someone back,” Brandon says. “It’s about getting yourself back.”

The accompanying video extends the song’s warmth and playfulness through hand-crafted collage animation inspired by Monty Python’s Flying Circus and the iconic cutout style of Terry Gilliam. Created in collaboration with his partner Sierra Zimmerman, the visual came together slowly during evenings at home in Vancouver.

“It was a really nice way to spend our evenings, her drawing on her iPad while I edit on my laptop, the two of us on the couch sharing a bottle of wine while the project slowly came to life,” says Brandon.

The release arrives during a busy creative period for Brandon Wolfe Scott. This summer, Yukon Blonde will perform at 12 festivals across Canada, including Mariposa Folk Festival and 2026 FIFA Vancouver. Outside of music, Brandon has been involved in the early development of the Vancouver-based art rental company Space & Shape for film, TV and commercial use, which has helped inspire him to make original visual art and a series of abstract pieces over the past few months.

Meanwhile, recent collaborations include co-writing and recording two songs with Estonian pop singer Eleryn Tiit for her upcoming sophomore album.

The roots of “Back For Me” stretch back years through a deep creative friendship with Gardiner. Since 2009, Gardiner’s band The Wooden Sky and Yukon Blonde have toured together across Canada and Europe, while Gardiner has mixed and mastered Brandon’s previously solo releases.

“Back For Me” feels like the culmination of all those shared years and experiences, a song about heartbreak that ultimately lands somewhere hopeful, restorative, and alive.
