In addition to their latest work, Skydiggers are celebrating a significant milestone: the 30th anniversary of their landmark album Road Radio, which featured the fan favourite “You’ve Got A Lot Of Nerve.” To commemorate the occasion, founding members Josh and Andy have been sharing stories and reflections, joined by special guests, across their social channels. As part of the anniversary, the band is releasing the official video for “It’s A Pity” on YouTube for the very first time.
Andy Maize had this to share about the Road Radio anniversary:
How can it have been 30 years ago?
What began in the fall of 1994 as an experiment with friends and colleagues Chris Marks and John Oliveira – testing out their new “portable/mobile” studio setup called (Road Radio) – unexpectedly led to a record deal with Warner Music Canada. That in turn became six weeks of “mobile” recording during the winter of 1995 at the Lighthouse Theatre in Port Dover, Ontario (I recommend the Perch Platter), and mixing in New York City with Michael Brauer – who would go on to mix Coldplay’s breakthrough album Parachutes and the single “Yellow”… fer fuck’s sake. Part of the wonder of this journey that we’ve been on is the connections one makes, the twists and turns that you try to play cool at the time but in retrospect shake your head and say… “Really?”
Our goal with Road Radio was to capture the energy of the band’s live performances on a recording… so we set up in the theatre as we would for a show and we just gave ‘er… on one night during the “test” days in October 1994 we recorded what turned out to be nearly half of the album… I’d never experienced a day/night of recording like that before nor have I since… although I’ve gotta say that last November’s recording session for what would become our latest album, Dreams & Second Chances, came pretty close…
To tell the story of Skydiggers is to tell the story of a thriving musical collaboration that was born in friendship and has abided with trust. Over the course of 15 studio albums and countless miles on the road, Skydiggers have grown from enthusiastic youngsters into husbands, fathers, and mentors. And while band members have changed over the decades, Josh Finlayson and Andy Maize remain its beating heart. With new collaborators bringing their unique musical histories into the circle, the sound of Skydiggers continues to evolve.
Rooted in a deep appreciation for storytelling and melody, their music reflects life’s highs and lows with honesty and heart. Whether on stage or in the studio, Skydiggers create songs that resonate – music made by friends, for friends.
