It’s coming up on a year since Vancouver’s Graham Brown Band released the album Outside Within, the latest addition to their impressive catalogue and another showcase for Graham’s incendiary guitar playing. However, the band’s more mellow side is revealed in the new single “Tell The World,” and its accompanying video showing the band performing in an intimate setting.

Graham says, “It’s basically a song about believing in yourself, believing that you are worth it, and standing up for your beliefs even when the doubts creep in during the quiet hours. And that we are all stronger together if we help others do the same. The inspiration to write the song came to me when I had a moment of doubt, then I kinda went, I got this and I feel strong. Come along for the ride and sing it loud and clear.”

As on previous Graham Brown Band albums, Outside Within was captured live in the studio, this time at Hipposonic in Vancouver where the bulk of its 12 songs were remarkably laid down in a single Saturday afternoon. As usual, Brown is backed by guitarist/keyboardist Rob Blackburn, bassist John Werner and drummer Mark Gruft, and throughout the album it’s clear that the band is firing on all cylinders and having a blast doing it.

There’s no shortage of highlights on Outside Within, from the rousing first single “Courage Comes” and blazing fretboard wizardry on “Graveyard Trees” to other tracks such as “Heaven” that share the more country-fied vibes of “Tell The World.” What’s most refreshing is how immediate all of Brown’s songwriting comes across, with few overt concessions to nostalgia.

“I truly do put my heart and soul into these songs and paint a picture for the listener the best I can,” Graham says. “I can only say that I am trying to improve my skills every day, and part of those skills I believe are to let the art form breathe and not over-think or complicate things. I’ve written about 400 or more songs thus far and there is still so much to learn. That’s what I love about songwriting or any art form—it is infinite if you let it be.”

Brown has adhered to that philosophy ever since he first made his mark in the 1980s as co-founder of Canadian alt-country pioneers Jr. Gone Wild. From there, he embarked on several different projects, including Happyman, Brilliant Orange and Graham Brown & The Prairie Dogs. But since the release of the 2011 album Hiwatt, the Graham Brown Band has made its mark as an acclaimed international touring attraction. Now with Outside Within, they are back to tearing up stages once again.
