Some things just never get old. And when it comes to Peter Noone, that couldn’t be more true.

At 78 years young, the longtime frontman of Herman’s Hermits is still doing what he does best: singing, cracking jokes and making people smile.

Noone returned to the Avalon Theatre at Fallsview Casino Resort on Wednesday, October 21, for another afternoon of classic hits, plenty of laughs and a trip down memory lane. And if there’s one thing that hasn’t changed over the years, it’s his ability to entertain a crowd.

This latest visit was a bit of a milestone. It marked Noone’s 30th performance at the Avalon Theatre and his 14th year appearing at the venue since his first visit in 2007. By now, the British singer is practically a regular in Niagara Falls, and it’s easy to see why audiences keep coming back to see him.

For about 70 minutes, Noone kept the music and laughs coming, mixing familiar Herman’s Hermits favourites with a few covers and plenty of his trademark humour.

The show kicked off with “I’m Into Something Good,” the 1964 hit that helped launch Herman’s Hermits to fame. It was a fitting way to start an afternoon filled with songs that have been part of people’s lives for more than 60 years.

From there, the music kept rolling with “Wonderful World,” “Love Potion No. 9,” “Listen People” and “Daydream Believer,” along with several other familiar tunes.

Backing Noone was his touring band, Herman’s Hermits, featuring Billy Sullivan and Vance Brescia on guitars, Rick Spina on keyboards and Dave Ferrara on drums. The four musicians have become an important part of Noone’s live shows, keeping those familiar songs sounding fresh while giving him plenty of room to have fun with the audience.

And a Peter Noone concert has never been just about the music.

He’s always been a bit of a character, and that’s half the fun of watching him perform. Between songs, he kept the jokes coming, shared some laughs and made sure the audience felt like part of the show.

At times, he even wandered off the stage and into the crowd, singing and joking with fans along the way. Those moments gave the afternoon a relaxed, friendly feel. It was more like spending time with an old friend than watching someone simply go through a setlist.

And at 78, Noone still has plenty of energy to spare.

He moved through the show with a smile, clearly enjoying himself and never missing a chance to have a little fun. His cheeky British humour remains as much a part of the performance as the songs themselves.

The afternoon wasn’t limited to Herman’s Hermits hits, either. Noone and the band had some fun with Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire,” the rock ‘n’ roll favourite “Sea Cruise” and The Rolling Stones’ “Start Me Up,” adding a little variety along the way.

Of course, the songs that made Herman’s Hermits famous were still the heart of the show.

“Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat?,” “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” and “I’m Henry the VIII” helped bring the afternoon toward its finish, before Noone wrapped things up with “There’s a Kind of Hush.”

What makes Noone so enjoyable after all these years is that he doesn’t seem to have lost any of his love for performing. He could easily stand behind a microphone, sing the hits and call it a day. Instead, he keeps things light, gets the audience involved and makes sure everyone has a good time.

More than six decades after becoming one of the familiar faces of the British Invasion, he’s still out there doing what he loves. And judging by his energy and good humour, slowing down doesn’t seem to be on his mind.

Wednesday’s concert was the first of three Avalon performances over two days, with Noone returning Thursday, October 22, for shows at 3 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

After 30 performances at the Avalon Theatre, Noone has clearly found a place where he feels right at home. And for the fans who keep coming back, it’s another chance to enjoy the songs, the memories and the man who made them famous.

And after all these years, Peter Noone is still into something good.
