Diamond Dogs frontman goes soul deep on his new solo album, claims the crown, and makes it clear: this time, it’s soul or nothing.
Sulo is best known as the charismatic frontman and main songwriter of legendary Swedish boogie rockers Diamond Dogs. Fifteen albums into their career, the band remains at the top of their game. Their most recent release, the critically acclaimed Little Richard tribute Macon Georgia Giant, led them to perform at the Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon, Georgia, record at the legendary Capricorn Studios, and connect with Otis Redding’s family as well as Little Richard’s cousin.
That album, releases through Wild Kingdom / Sound Pollution, was a collaboration with Sulo’s longtime friend Chris Spedding (Bryan Ferry, Elton John, Sex Pistols), and it’s just one chapter in a career filled with notable partnerships. Beyond Diamond Dogs, Sulo has worked with artists such as Maria McKee, Janis Ian, Crystal Gayle, Ian Hunter, and Paul Young. He is also the singer and songwriter for UK-based act The Crunch, featuring members of The Clash and Sham 69.
One of his generation’s most prolific songwriters, Sulo has consistently released solo material alongside his band projects. Soul Or Nothing, due in March, may be his most personal and soulful statement to date.
The title plays on the spirit of the Small Faces classic “All or Nothing,” but the message here is clear. This album is a heartfelt homage to the raspy, blue-eyed soul voices that shaped Sulo’s singing and songwriting — artists like Joe Cocker, Rod Stewart, Terry Reid, and Frankie Miller. Those British interpreters of American soul in the 1960s and 70s, who transformed the genre into something uniquely their own, serve as the guiding light for this record.
Gracefully dressed in horns, gospel choirs, and lush string arrangements, the album radiates vintage warmth. At times, you’d swear it was 1975, not 2026. If there were a doctorate in early ’70s British rock ’n’ roll, Sulo would graduate with honors.
