Voivod Live in Moncton, New Brunswick – July 25, 2015

Dan Mongrain -1-2(Moncton, NB) – Quebec heavy-metal band Voivod performed last Saturday, July 25th as part of the Mud City Meltdown. Voivod is a Canadian heavy metal band from Jonquière, Québec. Their musical style has changed several times since the band’s origin in the early 1980s. Starting out as a speed metal band, Voivod have added a mix of progressive metal and thrash metal to create their own unique metal style.

Since their debut record in 1984, Voivod have released eleven studio albums as well as one EP, one live album, two compilations, seven demos and one DVD featuring a live concert. The band found mainstream success in the late 1980s with the album Nothingface (1989), which was the first Voivod album to enter the Billboard 200 charts, peaking at number 114. Voivod‘s most recent studio album is 2013’s Target Earth, their only album with the lineup of Snake (vocals), Chewy (guitar), Blacky (bass) and Away (drums).

The present line up of band members are Michel Langevin (drums, percussion, accordion), Denis Belanger (vocals), Dan Mongrain (guitars) and Dominique Laroche (bass).

The band came onstage load and proud opening with their first song Kluskap. The crowd went crazy from the first chord and never let up until the last chord was struck. The new band lineup was tight and well rehearsed.

This was a rare treat for the fans of metal as this was the only show Voivod has scheduled in the east coast before they head out this fall on their European tour. There were fans in the crowd from all the Atlantic Provinces. Thanks to Mud City Meltdown music week for arranging this show.

The band went through its set list, Tribal, Unknown, Ripping, Order, Nothing, The Prow, Chaos, Psychic, Over, Inner, Mechanical and Connected, to the thunderous noise of the audience. I don’t know who was louder the band or the fans. Like all metal concerts I shoot, I left with my ears ringing and a true appreciation of ‘s ability to represent the best of metal.
