There has been quite a hype surrounding four young musicians out of Michigan who call themselves Greta Van Fleet, formed in 2012. They have been garnering a lot attention, especially in the last year or so, not only for their great music and musicianship but because of their sound which has been compared to that of Led Zeppelin. Singer Josh Kiszka is constantly being compared to Zeppelin frontman/vocalist Robert Plant.

You either love them or you hate them and if last Friday’s show in Toronto at Rebel Nightclub is any indication, Greta Van Fleet has a lot of love here in Canada. The band played its first major Canadian show to a sold out crowd of about 3,000 fans. This was the first of two sold out shows last weekend.

The show got underway with Highway Tune. Kiszka came out and greeted Toronto with a bouquet of white roses and began tossing them one by one to the energetic and welcoming crowd. The 12 song-set continued with Edge of Darkness, When the Cold Wind Blows and a brand new tune called When the Curtain Falls.

Greta Van Fleet is rounded out by Josh’s twin brother and guitarist Jake Kiszka, their younger brother, bassist and keyboardist Sam Kiszka and drummer Danny Wagner. From start to finish Greta Van Fleet kept the fans captivated with the tonne of energy they had on stage playing a 90-minute set that included many great jams and solos.

The main set ended with Lover Leaver Taker Believer and the band went off stage. But the crowd wanted more and it wasn’t long before Greta Van Fleet came back out for an encore that lasted nearly 20-minutes with Black Smoke Rising and Safari Song. During the encore Wagner played an amazing drum solo that lasted a few minutes.

But before you knew it, the show was over and Greta Van Fleet had left the stage for the final time that night. If this show is any sign as to what the future holds for these guys here in the Great White North, especially Toronto, I’m sure they will definitely be welcomed back to play anytime!
