Canada’s Blue Rodeo returned to Artpark on June 21 as part of this year’s Tuesday Night Concert Series. Having played Artpark multiple times previously, Blue Rodeo failed to disappoint playing 18 songs worth of material spanning from their 30 plus years as a band.

Blue Rodeo has seen a number of band members come and go over the years. The core of the band – singer Jim Cuddy, singer Greg Keelor and bassist Bazil Donovan – have been together for over 30 years. The current line up also features guitarist Colin Cripps, keyboardist Mike Bogulski, pedal steel guitarist Bob Egan and drummer Glenn Milchem.

Blue Rodeo kicked the night off with What Am I Doing Here followed by Head Over Heels and Rose-Coloured Glasses.

Other hits of the night included Cynthia, Diamond Mine, After the Rain, Til I Am Myself Again, 5 Days In May and Lost Together. To finish off the night Blue Rodeo‘s encore consisted of Try, It Could Happen To You and Hasn’t Hit Me Yet.

One of my favourites of the night was when Greg Keelor, along with Bogulski, performed Dark Angel. Keelor stood in the spotlight, microphone in hand, and sang Dark Angel as his much familiar raspy voice fans have grown to love and enjoy over the years filled the air.

Jim Cuddy was looking better than the last time I saw him back in November when he sat down with his leg propped up during Blue Rodeo‘s performance at The Light of Day Concert in St. Catharines, Ontario. Cuddy’s leg was in a cast that night but tonight he was cast-free and back to his old self.

Blue Rodeo played for almost two hours to a very receptive crowd, which sang along to many of Blue Rodeo‘s hits.

Opening the show was Basia Bulat – a folk singer-songwriter from Toronto known for playing with an autoharp. Not many people are familiar with her or her music. Bulat is gaining much attention with her fourth album, Good Advice, released earlier this year on February 12th. Her first album, Oh My Darling, was released in 2007 followed by Heart of My Own in 2010 and Tall Tall Shadow in 2013.

All in all, it was a great night of music and great weather!

Next week, June 28, Whitesnake with Whitford/St. Holmes play the Tuesday Night Concert Series at Artpark.
